Grain Free Dog Food

Most dog foods on the market are made with some form of grain. Although grain is not a bad ingredient, it seems that some dogs thrive much more on a dog food made without grain. If you have a dog that suffers from an allergy problem or a chronic illness, there is a chance that your dog food may be the culprit. For some reason many dogs have a hard time digesting certain types of grain, therefore they develop allergies to their dog food. Most allergies in dogs manifest as skin allergies and sometimes sensitive stomachs as well.

Once your dog has been diagnosed with a skin allergy or a stomach illness, it may be time to try a new dog food. Grain free dog foods are made with high protein ingredients as well as other healthy vegetables, starches and fibers. If you take a look at the back of your dog food bag you may notice that the first or second ingredient is corn. Corn is used as a bulk filler for most dog foods. If you find that your dog food’s main ingredient is corn then it is advisable to switch to a food that has meat as the main and first ingredient. Some other popular ingredients are chicken or beef by-products, preservatives, and hormones. All of these ingredients are not the types of food you should be feeding your pet. Often the grain that is used in dog food is wheat. Now, wheat is not necessarily a bad ingredient, however it can cause problems with many dogs.

Grain free dog food often eliminates all sources of grain from the food. This may not be necessary for your dog. Often dog foods that consist of brown rice or oatmeal are much easier for your dog to digest. Having some form of grain in your dogs food will ensure that your dog is getting fiber and staying satisfied longer. But if your dog cannot digest any form of grain, then grain free dog food can be an excellent choice for your pet. Grain free dog food will replace the grains with other foods such as, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, flaxseeds, apples, alfalfa, and many other healthy foods. Each brand of grain free food will have its own unique recipe to fulfill your dog’s needs. The main ingredient in these foods is meat and often a grain free dog food will have more than one type of meat in the ingredients.

Regardless whether you choose grain free or not, you need to read the labels of you dog’s food. By sticking to a high quality dog food that uses meat as its main ingredient and not corn, you are already doing your dog a big favor. Also try to make sure the food you buy is pesticide and hormone free. You may pay a little extra for these foods but your dog will thank you for it. If you notice a big improvement in the way your dog feels and acts then you know you have made the right choice.
